Differential Fluid Service
The differential lets the wheels turn at different speeds through a corner, and it runs in its own gear oil. It is easy to forget because it rarely gives a warning, which is exactly why it is worth checking, especially on trucks that tow and on four wheel and all wheel drive vehicles.

What the job involves
- 1Drain the old gear oil and check it for metal, which tells us how the gears are wearing.
- 2Clean the drain plug and replace the gasket or cover seal where needed.
- 3Refill with the gear oil weight your vehicle specifies, with friction modifier for limited slip units.
- 4Check the front differential and transfer case too on four wheel and all wheel drive vehicles.
When you need it
If any of these sound like your car, bring it in and we will look at it.
- At the interval in your owner's manual
- Sooner if you tow, carry heavy loads or drive off road
- A whine or howl from under the car that changes with speed
- Oil seeping around the differential cover
